Violent Crimes mar Notting Hill Carnival

Violent crimes, knife stabs, acid attacks and others marred the Notting Hill Carnival. A typical victim was slashed as crowds dispersed from the Notting Hill Carnival on Bank Holiday Monday. Over the weekend more than 400 people were arrested and 69 weapons were seized – including acid, metal pole and a stun gun – as police implemented new stop and search powers and rolled out the use of ‘knife arches’ at the event for the first time in its history to clamp down on the amount of weapons being sneaked in. It comes as Iain Duncan Smith demanded police should dramatically increase the use of stop and search to combat spiralling gang crime in the capital. Pressure has mounted on London Mayor Sadiq Khan after the number of killings in the city topped 100 last week. Despite the huge police presence in Notting Hill, brazen festival-goers were pictured openly taking drugs in front of officers as they partied in the streets of west London for the second day in a row
